Marble Falls ISD honors Herrington after repairing the tennis center
Money left from the 2018 bond gave Marble Falls Independent School District officials opportunities to examine other facility needs and still meet the objectives of the bond.
Officials decided the best way to use that money was to address needs that “benefitted the entire community,” athletic director Brian Herman said. Two projects were at the top of the list: a new track at Pony Stadium and addressing wear and tear at the Herrington Tennis Center at Marble Falls High School.
So before the high school tennis team began practices for the 2022-23 season, officials invited Nancy Herrington, a retired Marble Falls Middle School teacher and coach, to the facility named after her and her late husband, Charlie, for all they’ve done for the sport, Herman said.
“She is a pillar of our community when it comes to support and how it relates to tennis,” he said. “We wanted to recognize Ms. Herrington and all she’s done in the area.”
Charlie Herrington was the tennis pro at Hidden Falls Country Club in Meadowlakes for years and taught many of the players during the 1980s when Marble Falls was a Class 3A powerhouse. He helped numerous players reach the state tournament and capture state titles. Cory Horne was the last state champion in boys singles in 1991.
Tennis was more than a sport for the Herringtons – it gave them a family, as they said when they reflected on what the sport has meant to them and to the Highland Lakes community. Nancy Herrington continues to play tennis and has often represented the sport at school district and local government gatherings related to sports facilities.
Herman noted that after he became the athletic director, one task was to study the tennis center and recommend what needed to be addressed: resurfacing, repairing or buying new wind screens, and replacing awnings that provide invaluable shade for spectators is what he discovered.
“We got rid of all the old court awnings,” he said. “The old ones caught the wind and fell, and they were in disrepair for awhile.”
Herman also commended the district’s maintenance staff for ensuring the work was completed long before the tennis season began.
